Abstract/Summary
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for residential dwellings on land to the west of Hannah’s Lane, Abbotsbury, Dorset. The site is centred at NGR SY 5738 8526 and lies at a height of approximately 45m aOD. The site lay in the area of an old yard between the back gardens of houses on West Street and allotments to the south .A Mediaeval ploughsoil containing 12th-13th century pottery were observed. It appeared that there had been infilling to raise the height of the site since that period. The level of Hannah’s Lane also appeared to have been raised. The natural geology of the site is Corallian with Abbotsbury iron ore. The watching brief took place on 19 and 20 July and 16 September 1999. All the archaeological work was carried out by Southern Archaeological Services Ltd of Southampton and was funded by Ilchester Estates.
