Abstract/Summary

Brief catalogue of archaeological works carried out on Roman sites in Britain during 1983. This includes the following summaries for sites in Dorchester (on pages 320), reproduced here in full. (1) Dorchester (Durnovaria, SY 694907): excavation on the east side of Church Street revealed parts of a timber building badly disturbed by post-Roman pits. At the south end of the street part of an E-W Roman street was seen; it was over 3.5 m wide and on the same alignment as that reported in South Street. [Britannia xiv (1983), 324] On the south side was a flat-bottomed channel 1.6 m wide and a masonry wall 5 m long which ran southwards. Later the wall was extended northwards onto the metalling, crossing the channel which was now filled in perhaps for the insertion of the water-pipe recorded at South Street. [Work by the Central Excavation Unit was directed by Mr D. Batchelor, who sent details.]
