Abstract/Summary

Two interesting relics of antiquity were brought to light one day last week by the pickaxe and spade of the labourers employed in excavating the trenches for the sewerage at present progressing in this town. They were found in Pease Lane, near the Unitarian Chapel, about two feet below the surface, and consist of two Roman urns, one large and one small, the larger containing the remains of bones; the contents of the smaller are supposed to be the ashes of a heart. The are composed of rough, black earthenware, and are of an oval shape. Unfortunately, the large one was broken by the pickaxe of the excavator. They are at present in the possession of Mr Gould, painter and decorator.
