Abstract/Summary

A speculation over the form and nature of ‘Dunium’ the capital of the Durotriges, bordered by a lake to the north (in the Frome Valley), with Poundbury as its fortress and another ‘pastoral camp’ (in fact the aqueduct earthworks) to the west. The remaining limits were apparently marked by barrows. Includes a note on the discovery of two barrows during the demolition of part of the Roman defences in South Walks in 1864 and a brief description of finds and trenches made into the aqueduct and Poundbury Camp. Maiden Castle is regarded as being of Roman date.
