Abstract/Summary

Article on the nature and function of lynchets in Dorset with reference to numerous sites. Includes a short section (p. 80) concerning the excavation of a lynchet at Bradford Peverell in 1902 by H.B. Middleton, adjacent to the Dorchester Aqueduct. It also includes a short section (pp. 89-90) describing the excavation of five cuttings at Whitefield in order to clear up a controversy over the line of the aqueduct which had previuosly been thought to travel in a slight uphill gradient following a lynchet between Whitefield and Poundbury. The excavations demonstrated that the aqueduct actually deviated from the lynchet to follow the countours of a combe at this point.
