Abstract/Summary

An extension to the existing car park of IPL posed a threat to one of the surviving areas of the eastern defences of Poundbury Camp, close to the NE corner. It was also probabale that the Roman aqueduct to Dorchester crossed the line of the defences in this vicinity. The opportunity was taken in October -November 1980 to examine the defences and the course of the aqueduct. A section of the inner ditch was excavated but no trace of the outer rampart was found, it had probably been destroyed by the creation of the aqueduct. A scatter of disarticulated human bone within the ditch fill was interpreted as related to the capture of the fort by the Romans. The upper fills related to the digging of the aqueduct. Two burials were excavated, probably outliers of the large late Roman cemetery further down the hillside.
