Abstract/Summary
Context One Archaeological Services carried out an archaeological field evaluation at the former Dorset County Council Observation and Assessment Centre, 12-14 Gloucester Road, Dorchester, on 27 October 2003.
Three trenches measuring 5 x 1.5 m, 3 x 1.5 m and 2 x 1.5 m were excavated. The evaluation provided no evidence for the presence of the archaeological remains or deposits and only a small quantity of artefacts was recovered. This consisted of post-medieval and modern material, together with two residual prehistoric worked flints, all from the topsoil. This is consistent with a normal background scatter of artefacts that would have been deposited as waste material through agricultural manuring or allotment use, that appears to have typified the character of the site prior to development in the early 20th century.
