Description
Context One Archaeological Services carried out an archaeological field evaluation at the former Dorset County Council Observation and Assessment Centre, 12-14 Gloucester Road, Dorchester, on 27 October 2003.
Trench 1 was 5m by 1.5m across and aligned approximately E-W to the rear of the property. Approximately 0.4m topsoil overlay about 0.2m subsoil which overlay natural chalk. No archaeological features were observed. A small quantity of post-medieval pottery, oyster shell and two flint flakes were recovered from the topsoil. This is consistent with a normal background scatter of artefacts that would have been deposited as waste material through agricultural manuring or allotment use, that appears to have typified the character of the site prior to development in the early 20th century.
