Abstract/Summary
‘SY 5534 9080. I agreed to undertake a watching brief on behalf of Wessex Water on a small area of topsoil stripping close to that company’s Litton Cheney reservoir. The area had archaeological potential because of nearby finds of Roman occupation evidence and an undated inhumation (DSMR – Litton Cheney nos 25 & 41), but conversely anecdotal evidence and a comparison of ground levels suggested previous disturbance.
I visited on 27th June 2002. The area that had been stripped is shown on the attached plan. The depth of material that had been removed was only around 0.10 to 0.12m. Much of the exposed surface was topsoil, but with patches of stony subsoil showing through. There were also a couple of drains in the area. I found no artefacts of any significance.’
