Abstract/Summary

‘A detailed gradiometer survey was conducted over land at Hurn Quarry, Christchurch, Dorset (centred on NGR 412272 097337). The project was commissioned by New Milton Sand & Ballast Ltd (NMSB) with the aim of establishing the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features in support of a planning application for the development of the site as a sand and gravel quarry. The site comprises arable fields located west of the village of Hurn, Christchurch, and covers an area of 21 ha. The geophysical survey was undertaken between 21 – 25 February 2022. The detailed gradiometer survey has identified features associated with archaeological and modern activity. The archaeological anomalies are noted across the southern portion of the site. These are primarily associated with a rectilinear field system of uncertain date. Within this area, there are pit-like anomalies and a penannular anomaly that may relate to associated settlement activity. However, the underlying geology of sands and gravels produce magnetic contrasts which can prove challenging to identify features confidently. Such activity could date from the Bronze Age to the medieval period. Given that there is relatively continuous evidence across this period in the vicinity of the site, it is not clear precisely what period these features relate to, based on these results alone. There are generally very few anomalies in the northern part of the site that are archaeological in origin, with the majority relating to modern features. For example, an amorphous area of increased magnetic response has been attributed to activity relating to the livery yard and many ferrous other ferrous anomalies are associated with stables and fencing.’
