SDO21215 - Land at Huntley Down, Milborne St Andrew, Dorset: Detailed Gradiometer Survey Report

‘A detailed gradiometer survey was conducted over land at Huntley Down, Milborne St Andrew, Blandford Forum, Dorset (centred on NGR 380170 098120). The project was commissioned by Wyatt Homes with the aim of establishing the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features in support of a planning application for the development of residential housing within the site. The site comprises a currently disused field under scrub and rough pasture covering an area of 1.05 ha. The geophysical survey was undertaken on the 9th of February 2017. The detailed gradiometer survey has demonstrated the presence of a number of anomalies of potential archaeological interest in the survey area. The anomalies identified as being of archaeological interest are primarily ditch-like features of an unknown date. An area of possible pitting has also been detected, however it is not clear whether this is archaeological or natural in origin. Additionally, this geophysical survey has detected a concentration of ferrous and/or fired debris covering much of the east of the Site, which corresponds with hard standing visible in aerial photographs and surface material.’
