SDO21140 - Budmouth Academy, Chickerell Road, Weymouth DT4 9SY. High-Level Archaeological Appraisal

‘Heritage Planning Services Ltd has been commissioned by HSP Consulting (the agent) to prepare a high-level archaeological appraisal on Budmouth Academy, Chickerell Road, Weymouth, DT4 9SY (the Project Site). This report has shown that the Project Site has been in use for agriculture throughout documented history and in the absence of further evidence from the surrounding landscape it would be sensible to infer that this was also the case throughout the Early Medieval and Medieval Period. However, evidence of a potential large named enclosure has been identified on later maps and may point to a hitherto undocumented use of the land that was located on the Parish boundary between the Early Medieval settlements of Chickerell and Wyke Regis. Later potential drainage systems noted on aerial photographs are at present considered to have very low heritage value due to the postulated Modern / Post Medieval origin. However, if intrusive investigation is required, the nature and date of these features may be further assessed. If development proposals have potential to impact undeveloped areas of the Project Site, it is recommended that the presence and significance of potential archaeology be identified at the earliest opportunity to assist in formulating proposals. Depending on the forthcoming proposals, a further assessment of the designated assets near to the Project Site should occur, principally in order to assess potential harm to the Grade II Montevideo House.’
