Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Eurovia Infrastructure Ltd (‘the client’), to undertake an archaeological watching brief during the excavation of 16 trial pits associated with the replacement of 12 traffic signs and 7 new solar bollards around the existing roundabout. The removal of block paving from traffic islands was also observed. The monitored works were centred on NGR 399739 099070, at Lake Gate roundabout, Wimborne Minster, Dorset. The works took place within a Scheduled Monument comprising Roman marching camp, forts and vexillation fortress (NHLE 1002418). The aim of the archaeological watching brief was to monitor activities while they were taking place, and to assess the level of survival of features associated with the Scheduled Monument, particularly the parts of the Roman marching camp and vexillation fortress, under the roundabout and road.
