Abstract/Summary
In September and October 2023, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation land at Woodlands Farm, Wimborne, Dorset. A total of 117 trenches were excavated.
Overall, the site contained a significant quantity of archaeological evidence, however this was largely concentrated towards the southern limits of the site. Many pits and ditches were encountered, the majority of evidence spanned the Late Iron Age and Roman periods, evidence of earlier prehistoric and medieval activity was limited. Those features encountered are for the most part indicative of settlement and some possible industrial activity.
There appeared to be a good correlation between recorded features and the geophysical anomalies, although there was a considerable number of additional features too.
Notably, no additional burials were identified across the trenches, to compliment the previously excavated and richly furnished un-urned Romano-British cremation, identified in the 1959 excavation.
