EDO7982 - Woodlands Farm, Woodlands; evaluation 2023

Archaeological evaluation by Cotswold Archaeology carried out on behalf of Woodlands Mannington Solar Limited. The evaluation involved the excavation of 117 trenches, 116 measuring 30m by 1.8m and one meauring 40m by 1.8m. Trenches 24, 30, and 31 were relocated due to onsite constraints. A mechanical excavator was used under archaeological supervision until the top of the natural substrate was reached. In field 1, trench 4 uncovered a single ditch terminus and trench 13 contained a singular small circular pit. In field 2, trench 17 contained a single ditch, trench 20 contained a single modern feature tht aligned with the modern horse gallop, trench 21 contained a continuation of the single ditch from trench 17, trench 22 contained a medieval/post-medieval ditch, trench 24 contained a single ditch, trench 26 one pit and one ditch, and trench 28 contained a single ditch that may be a continuation of that in trench 26. In field 3, trench 39 contained a single ditch with a medieval/post-medieval fill. In field 4, trench 42 contained a singular circular pit. In field 5, trench 49 contained a single ditch, trench 51 contained a single sub-oval pit, trench 52 contained a single ditch, trench 54 contained two ditches, and trench 58 contained a singular sub-circular pit. In field 6, trench 60 contained two pits and one ditch, trench 61 contained two features that weren't fully excavated, trench 62 contained one pit and four ditches, trench 63 contained one possible posthole, three pits and two possible ditches, trench 64 contained three ditches, trench 65 contained two pits and two ditches, trench 66 contained an alluvial deposit, trench 67 contained three ditches, trench 68 contained one possible ditch terminus, one pit and one ditch, trench 70 contained one ditch and five pits, trench 71 contained two ditches and three pits, trench 72 contained two deposits and a ditch, trench 73 contained two deposits,two ditches and a pit, trench 74 contained one posthole, two pits and two ditches, trench 75 contained one pit and two ditches, trench 76 contained a ditch, a pit and a posthole, trench 79 contained a single ditch, trench 80 contained two pits, two ditches and a ditch terminus, trench 81 contained one pit and a ditch, trench 82 contained one pit, trench 83 contained a ditch and a pit, trench 84 contained one pit, trench 85 contained four pits and on ditch, and trench 86 contained one pit. In field 7, trench 87 contained one sub-rounded pit, trench 89 contained two ditches, trench 90 contained one pit, trench 92 contained a single ditch, trench 93 contained one pit, trench 96 contained a ditch terminus, trench 99 contained a colluvial deposit and two sub-oval pits, trench 104 contained one pit and one ditch, trench 107 contained a ditch, trench 109 contained a sub-oval pit, trench 110 contained a ditch, a pit and another possible pit, trench 112 contained a sub-circular pit, trench 113 contained two pits, trench 114 contained two pits, and trench 116 contained a single ditch.
