Abstract/Summary
'Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) (‘the client’) to undertake an archaeological watching brief during the replacement of a transformer pole
lying within the bounds of the scheduled monument Bindon Hill Camp (NHLE 1002705). This work
forms the last part of archaeological monitoring associated with Winfrith Heath (WINH) E2L5 11kv
Circuit Network Improvement Scheme.
The works near west Lulworth, on Bindon Hill (location 4) comprised the replacement of a
transformer pole that consisted of two wooden poles braced to form a H-shape. New poles were
erected, and the old poles were cut down leaving the bases in the ground. A total of four trenches
were monitored, no archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were encountered. Within three of
the trenches (trenches 5, 6 and 7) there was evidence that the ground had been previously disturbed
during the erection of the original poles and laying of the associated electric cables. Within the
northeastern portion of trench 8 an area of shrub/ tree rooting was observed.'
