Abstract/Summary

The aims of the assessment of the route of the East-West Dorset Link Main were primarily to identify areas of enhanced soil depth that may have resulted form archaeological activity, especially settlement activity. This was to be achieved by undertaking a series of hand-augered boreholes at regular intervals in conjunction with a topographic and earthwork survey for each ‘plot’ through which the pipeline will pass. Additionally it was proposed to examine through augering the alluvial deposits of the River Frome floodplain to determine the depth, nature and quality of these deposits. Also it was proposed to examine through augering the presence, depth, nature and quality of deposits associated with two earthworks that were thought to cross the route of the pipeline.
