Abstract/Summary
A ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey was commissioned by the Environment Agency in connection with a proposed flood defence scheme to investigate possible features of archaeological interest, specifically the presence of crypts or vaults that may have been liable to subsidence or collapse. The survey results revealed strong anomalies likely to be graves, mostly found in areas of marked graves. Using benchmark data collected from a known crypt, it was established that there were no similar anomalies. The surveyors concluded that there were likely to be unmarked graves present but it was very unlikely that there were other crypts or vaults.
