Abstract/Summary
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to carry out an archaeological trial trench evaluation on land proposed for development at East Chickerell. The evaluation comprised 40 trenches (each approximately 50m x 2m) located across 6 fields and targeted on both geophysical anomalies and apparent blank areas throughout the proposed development footprint.
A number of ditches and deposits located in the southern half of the site contained material dating to the Romano-British period and two trenches located in the northern half contained material tentatively dated to this period. These were interpreted as field system or enclosure ditches. The archaeologists on site felt that the quantity and character of cultural material recovered for some of the ditches suggested contemporary settlement in the immediate area.
