Abstract/Summary

'In October 2010, Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation within Sandsfoot Castle, Weymouth, Dorset (SY67487737) to inform a proposal to open up the castle to the public. A single trench was excavated in the passage leading into the basement. The evaluation revealed that the stone flag floor of the passage and the basement had been robbed out, exposing the footings beneath and a drain running through these footings. The ashlar facing of the passage was also recorded. The passage and the basement had been backfilled with tips and dumps of stone and mortar rubble containing 18th and 19th century pottery to a depth of 1.5 m. These deposits probably derived from the robbing of the floor and the facing stone of the walls of the castle. A lead shot from a wall piece or swivel gun was the only find recovered that relates to the period of use of the castle.'
