EDO6304 - Sandsfoot Castle, Old Castle Road, Weymouth; evaluation 2010

An archaeological evaluation undertaken to inform a proposal to open the castle to the public, in particular a proposal for a platform within the castle to enable visitor access. A single trench was excavated in the passage leading to the basement, revealing that the stone flag floor of the passage and the basement had been robbed out, exposing the footings beneath and a drain. The ashlar facing of walls in the passage was recorded. The passage and basement had been backfilled with rubble containing 18th and 19th-century pottery to a depth of 1.5m. A lead shot from a wall piece or swivel gun was the only find recovered to relate to the period of use of the castle.
