SDO15297 - Land Adjacent to Little Park, Winterbourne Steepleton, Dorset. Archaeological Desk Based Assessment

‘Millward Davis were commissioned by ADAS UK Ltd to undertake an archaeological desk based assessment on behalf of SSE to consider the impact upon the heritage resource through the proposed works adjacent to Little Park, Winterbourne Steepleton, Dorset and centred on NGR 362673, 090528. The recorded cultural heritage resource within a 500m Study Area from the Site was considered in order to provide a context for the discussion and interpretation of the known and potential resource within the Site. There are four Scheduled Monuments and no Listed Buildings within the Study Area. These will not be impacted by the scheme. Overall the potential for recovering archaeological remains on the Site is considered to be moderate, and the potential archaeological resource within the Study Area may be considered to be of regional to national importance. The proposed scheme would have a localised, direct adverse impact within the footprint of the tracks. Excavations associated with the groundworks could damage or remove deposits which have a potential to contain evidence for archaeological activity. It is considered that, in order to comply with the criteria set out in national and local planning legislation, further archaeological investigation is likely to be required. However, the precise nature and scope of further investigations should be agreed through consultation with the Development Control Archaeologist for Dorset County Council, and undertaken in line with an agreed Written Scheme of Investigation.’
