Description

A desk based assessment was commissioned by ADAS UK ltd on behalf of SSE prior to works at the electricity substation adjacent to Little Park. The aim was to establish the known and potential cultural resource within the site and its environs. A range of documentary and cartographic sources were consulted iincluding previous studies mainly of the barrows in the area and a site visit carried out. One possible heritage asset was identified within the site boundary, an undated section of ditch. The immediate vicinity had a high density of archaeological remains dating to the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, four of which were Scheduled Monuments. It was concluded that the proposed work would have no impact on the Scheduled Monuments and that the potential for recovering archaeological remains on the site was moderate. The potential archaeological resource within the wider area was considered to be of regional to national importance and the proposed works could damage or remove deposits. Further investigation was required, the nature of which was to be determined.
