Abstract/Summary

‘A review of historic maps and archaeological trench evaluation for a proposed development site on land to the east of Newfield Road, Pimperne, Dorset (ST 9032 0980), was carried out by AC archaeology during May 2005. There are no previous records of archaeological activity on the site itself, but it does lie close to a Bronze Age ring ditch. Maps dating from 1814 to the present day show some minor changes in boundary layout, but all suggest that the site has been farmland from this date. Trenches totalling 150m in length were machine-excavated and each was 1.6m wide. These identified that ploughsoil was either directly overlying natural chalk or, in localised areas, lying above a shallow colluvial soil. No archaeological features were present, although a small quantity of prehistoric worked flint was recovered from a tree throw and from overburden contexts.’
