EDO6241 - Land easts of Newfield Road, Pimperne; historic map review and evaluation 2005

Archaeological evaluation comprising the excavation by machine of seven trenches 1.6m wide and 150m in total, equivalent to an approximately 2% sample of the proposed development area. The machine excavation was done under constant archaeological supervision and ceased when natural chalk was revealed; trench sections and bases were then cleaned by hand. No archaeological features or deposits were observed. In all trenches ploughsoil was either directly overlying natural chalk or, in some areas, a shallow colluvial soil. A small quantity of prehistoric flint was recovered from a tree throw and from overburden; a level of material typical of a general background scatter. A review of historic maps showed that from at least 1814 the site was farmland that has been largely arable in nature.
