Abstract/Summary

A hoard of Roman copper alloy and silver washed coins dating to 3rd century had been found during metal detecting. An exploratory trench measuring 1.1m by 0.9m revealed the remains of one East Dorset Black Burnished ware flagon placed upright in a small sub circular pit cut into an earlier Roman feature. It and some of the coins it contained were damaged by ploughing. The number of coins was apx 1500 to 2500 and a rapid assessment before cleaning suggested they were mainly debased copper alloy of the Gallic empire up to AD 274 together with higher value radiates dated after AD 274 including one of Probus attesting an earliest date of AD 276.
