Description

An exploratory trench measuring 1.1m by 0.9m was dug following the detection of a possible hoard. A plough-damaged Black Burnished ware flagon was found containing aproximately 1500 to 2500 coins, some also plough-damaged. It was set upright in a small pit cut into an earlier, Roman, feature, possibly a pit. The coins comprised a group of later 3rd century copper alloy and silver washed coins, with some scattered in the plough soil. Some pottery fragments were found and some briquetage in the fill soil together with a radiate of Tetricius II (272-274 AD). A separate nummus was found in the topsoil dating to the 4th century ( Valentinian AD 364-378) and was felt to be unrelated to the hoard.
