Abstract/Summary

‘A geophysical survey was conducted over land at Trinity Street, Dorchester in Dorset. The project was commissioned by West Dorset District Council with the aim of establishing the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features on the site ahead of a proposed development of a church or community building at the site. The survey area comprises a car park on the west side of Trinity Street and was under tarmac at the time of the survey. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys were undertaken over parts of the site and were successful in identifying anomalies of probable and possible archaeological interest, along with other anomalies and responses of uncertain origin. The GPR survey located possible building foundations in addition to a probable wall towards the western end of the site. Several low amplitude trends have been identified in the data that may prove to be of possible archaeological interest. The remaining anomalies detected are high amplitude responses with irregular shapes in plan; these features are of uncertain origin. Given the piling schedule proposed and impact on the anomalies identified, further intrusive excavation is not considered worthwhile, and all practical steps have now been taken to assess the archaeological potential of the Site overall.’
