Abstract/Summary

‘An archaeological evaluation of the site was carried out in February 1996. The investigation involved the excavation and recording of two trial pits; both 1 x 1m in plan. Trial pit 1 was located towards the centre of a fairly steep west-facing slope and contained a layer of colluvial material, with the artefact evidence indicating a likely 17th-18th- century date for its formation. Trial pit 2 was located towards the base of this slope, and contained a steep cutting, seemingly where the former ground surface has been cut away and a verge incorporated adjacent to and level with Church Hill road. Modern finds recovered suggest a fairly recent date for this. The trial pits have failed to reveal the presence of archaeological deposits, with the post-Medieval pottery and worked flint recovered, indicating possible activity upslope of the development.’
