Description

Evaluation of a site proposed for a new building revealed no archaeological features or finds. The investigation involved the excavation and recording of two 1m by 1m trial pits Trial pit 1 was located towards the centre of a fairly steep west-facing slope and contained a layer of colluvial material, with the artefact evidence indicating a likely 17th-18th- century date for its formation. Trial pit 2 was located towards the base of this slope, and contained a steep cutting, seemingly where the former ground surface has been cut away and a verge incorporated adjacent to and level with Church Hill road. Modern finds recovered suggest a fairly recent date for this. Post-medieval pottery and worked flint were recovered, indicating possible activity upslope of the site.
