Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation, excavation and subsequent monitoring was carried out prior to, and during, the installation of new pipelines within the existing Wytch Farm oilfield, Dorset (centred on NGR SY985855). The evaluation identified two areas that were considered to have been used for saltworking during the middle ages, one of which had been identified and examined during the previous oilfield development in 1987. Subsequent excavation at the latter site identified two phases of archaeological activity, Medieval and Post-medieval. A large Medieval midden representing industrial waste from salt production was revealed with six medieval ditches and gullies cutting it. The Post-medieval features appear to be associated with agricultural and landscape management. This assessment report sets out proposals for the completion of the programme of archaeological works required under the terms of the planning condition for the project.
