Abstract/Summary

A watching brief was conducted in March and April 2015 on groundworks associated with an extension to the rear of the shop at 17 St Mary Street, Weymouth. It was found that the existing building had been constructed on the lower (stone) walls of an earlier building, whose floor level had been partly or wholly below street level: this was indicated by various structural elements, and was associated with several underground, brick built vaulted passageways of probable 17th or 18th century date to the immediate rear of the existing building. There were no traces of features, or finds, of medieval or other non-modern date in those parts of the development area which had not been disturbed by later building. Summary from record SDO14429: A watching brief was conducted on groundworks associated with an extension to the rear of the shop at the site. It was found that the existing building had been constructed on the lower stone walls of an earlier building whose floor level had been partly or wholly below street level. There were several underground, brick built vaulted passageways of probablr 17th or 18th century date.
