Description

Observations and recording during groundworks associated with the extension of a shop. Three items were found that related to a structure pre-dating the existing building: a series of recesses or putlogs in the brickwork in the northeastern corner of the shop, the upper part of a blocked in doorway in the eastern wall of the shop and a series of vaulted brick built passageways with flag flooring to the east of the eastern wall of the site. This suggested that an older building, possibly of 16th or 17th century date, had existed at a lower level. There had been a fire which may have led to the abandonment of the vaulted areas whose purpose is unclear. They appear to be of probable 17th or 18th century date and the pottery found was mainly of 19th century date. There was no evidence of medieval material throughout.
