Abstract/Summary

'Between 5th and 9th August 2013 Wardell Armstrong Archaeology undertook geophysical surveys of land at Henbury, Dorset, at the request of Wardell Armstrong LLP. This followed a proposal by Lightsource Renewable Energy Limited for a solar development at the site. The objective of the geophysical surveys was to determine the presence/absence, nature and extent of potential archaeological features within the study area, and the presence/absence of any known modern features within the survey area, which may affect the results. Geomagnetic surveys covering c.13.3ha of land were conducted within three pastoral fields to the south of Henbury Pit near Corfe Mullen in East Dorset, covering the proposed location the proposed development. A number of modern features were detected during the geophysical survey, including brick and metal structures, and areas of modern made-ground. A series of probable soil-filled features were detected at the site, which have been ascribed to former stream channels and/or tree boles. It is also possible that sand and gravel extraction has taken place at the site on a small scale and that some of these features relate to former sand/gravel pits.'
