Abstract/Summary

Context One Archaeology Services Ltd (COAS) carried out an Archaeological Field Evaluation on land at the former Fire Station, Bridport Road, Dorchester, Dorset (NGR SY 6836590566) on the 27th of January 2011. The project was commissioned and funded by West Dorset Health Design Practice and was undertaken prior to the determination of a planning application for proposed development of the site. The investigation was requested by West Dorset District Council on the advice of Mr Steve Wallis (Senior Archaeologist, Dorset District Council). The request for investigation was made as a recent archaeological excavation revealed a large Roman cemetery comprising 70 truncated and intercutting graves just c. 100m east of the Site (COAS 2008). Despite the proximity of the Site to a known Roman cemetery to the east no archaeological features or deposits were located during the evaluation.
