Arrowhead Archaeology AA10 Evaluation Report 1

Abstract/Summary

Archaeological evaluation was undertaken in January 2010 in the form of three machined trenches and a test pit. Parts of a ditch system of probable Iron Age date occurred in the eastern part of the area of proposed development, and part of a gully of probable medieval date was also sampled. In general, quantities of finds were very low within the fills of the sampled features, and their interpretation as part of a field system is supported by the absence of finds in the topsoil of earlier than post-medieval date. There is no indication of domestic or industrial use nearby inn any period, and it is surmised that intense prehistoric activity, if present in the area, is most likely to be situated to the east of the area of proposed development, nearer the river.
