Description

Arrowhead Archaeology carried out an evaluation on land to the rear of Fuchsia Cottage which involved the excavation of three trenches and a test pit. These were excavated by mechanical excavator equipped with a toothless ditching bucket. These were designated Trenches A, B, C and D, D being the test pit. Trench A measured 1.80m by 8.5m and was 0.53m deep. Trench B measured 1.8m wide, 5.80m long and 0.67m deep. Trench C measured 1.35m wide, 4.95m long, and 0.67m deep. Trench D measured 1.5m wide, 1.3m long and 0.70m deep. Trenches were ramped at their ends, in trench B the ramping was reduced by hand to allow closer examination of the trench section and terminal. Trench A contained a cut and a slot which were very likely either natural or recent gardening work. It did contain a ditch (F1) which also extended through trench B. this occurred in the eastern end of Trench A and bisected by the eastern side of Trench B. Rare finds of struck flint were found in its fill, as was a single small sherd of probably Iron Age pottery. Its approximate dimensions are 1.7m wide and 0.62m deep. Trench B also contained a gully (F4) originally U-shaped in profile, measuring 1.6m wide and 30cm deep. This contained a small amount of animal bone, rare struck flint, and a sherd of pottery. Trench C contained two ditches (F9 and F11). Ditch F9 was not fully excavated as it was outside the development footprint. F11 was also not sampled for the same reason. The test pit was dug to a depth of 70cm. no finds were present earlier than post-medieval.
