SDO123 - An Archaeological Evaluation of a Proposed Sports Field Development, Lane End, Milborne St Andrew, Dorset (centred on NGR SY80809755). Results of an archaeological trench evaluation

An archaeological evaluation of a proposed sports field development at Milborne St Andrew was undertaken by AC archaeology during January 2001. The evaluation comprised the machine excavation of three trenches located in the western zone of the site and towards the north-eastern boundary. All trench positions were selected to avoid inaccessible areas on site and a gas main running along the northern boundary. Trench 1 provided entirely negative, whilst Trench 3 contained only features of relatively modern date. One archaeological feature was present in Trench 2. This consisted of a N-S aligned linear feature representing a former ditch. Although no dating evidence was recovered from this feature, it is considered likely to be part of an earlier field system and possibly of prehistoric date.
