Abstract/Summary

‘An archaeological evaluation was carried out in conjunction with the redevelopment of 27 Salisbury Street, Blandford, Dorset during February 1998. An inspection of the site following demolition, indicated that extensive modern truncation had destroyed any potential archaeology across large areas of the site, including the street frontage. The trial trench revealed further truncation within the evaluation area, with demolition rubble lying directly above natural chalk. A single pit proved to be of Post Medieval date, with pottery and tile of the 18th/19th centuries. Four pieces of daub recovered from this pit may indicate that it was open during the clearance of old Blandford following the extensive fire of 1731, after which the present Georgian town was constructed. The degree of truncation and the low level of archaeological activity means that development is unlikely to have any significant impact on archaeology within the site area.’
