Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Dorset County Council to undertake an archaeological watching brief at Gosling’s Bridge, Lyme Regis, Dorset centred at NGR 334150 092300. The archaeological watching brief was commissioned by the County Archaeologist and was designed to record any archaeological deposits which may be exposed during bridge-strengthening works. The bridge strengthening work involved stripping the tarmac and underlying soil layers by hand excavation. The masonry structure of the bridge was then covered with a reinforced concrete beam. The archaeological watching brief and recording work was carried out between 11th June 2003 and 11th July 2003. Observations and recording revealed five phases of widening and re-building of the bridge spans. The earliest phase may well be contemporary with the building of the Town Mill.
