Abstract/Summary

‘In April 1996 an archaeological evaluation was carried out on a proposed development site south of Tinney’s Lane…by machine-dug evaluation trenches. In general…the site was largely unaffected by modern disturbance, and…archaeological levels, though dispersed and discontinuous,…were well preserved.’ The northern part of the site contained evidence for extensive medieval quarrying and a large Roman ditch. A crouched inhumation was found in the centre of the site, almost certainly prehistoric and probably contemporary with a nearby find of Bronze Age pottery. Other undated features were also observed. The SE of the site had been severely truncated by post-medieval terracing, and the SW, though relatively undisturbed, was of little archaeological interest.
