Full Description

Found during an evaluation conducted by AC Archaeology in 1996 [F103] and later excavated by Wessex Archaeology during January 1997 in advance of a housing development (Knotts Paddock) south of Tinney’s Lane, Sherborne [36]. The results of the excavation have been published in PDNHAS, 121, 53-69 (1). Numbers in square brackets below refer to context numbers given in this report.

An E-W oriented linear feature [36] with a v-shaped profile was excavated at the northern end of the site. It measured 2m wide and 0.7m deep, and may have been deliberately backfilled with a single homogenous fill. A post-hole [31] with 0.20m diameter and 0.23m deep, had been cut into the south side of the ditch. The packing of this post-hole had been subsequently sealed by the fill of the ditch. A single fragment of Iron Age pottery, 2 fragments of Romano-British and a single fragment of medieval pottery were recovered from the ditch. However, A section of the ditch had been excavated in an earlier evaluation (2), from which large quantities of Romano-British pottery had been recovered. It is possible that the single sherd of medieval pottery was intrusive, derived from the large medieval quarry pit that partially truncated the ditch.
