Abstract/Summary

Brief notes on recent work in Dorchester are reproduced here in full: "In Dorchester a watching brief by the writer on housing construction in Durngate Street, north-east of Wollaston House, revealed another section of a major east-west road from the town grid. Traces of a building, two ovens, a well and probably part of a main drain adjoined the road on the south. At the rear of St Peter's church, a parallel east-west road, 120m to the north, was recorded. To its south and immediately north of the church, foundations of a substantial building demolished in the Roman period were cut by two pits , one of medieval date. No traces of an early ecclesiastical structure or cemetery were recognised. [… report on Methodist chapel excavations…] Observations by June Johnstone of housing development on the line of the south defences in Acland Road showed that the site had been extensively disturbed and no trace of the rampart survived. Traces of metalling and Roman occupation debris survived north of the presumed rampart line."
