A pier marked on a chart of Portland of 1779 . (1) Named ‘Hop Pier’ seemingly on south side of cove in 1765, (2) ‘Hop Pier or South Pier’ in 1794, (3) shown here, with two others on north side (‘Church Hope Piers’) in 1800 and 1837. (4-5) Outline shown (not named) at ‘Church Ope’ in 1841. (6)
