Full Description

Quarries marked on the second edition OS map.
No quarrying was taking place in 1863, but by 1901 'Weston Quarries' were at work centred on SY 68457090. (1) By 1926 the quarries had extended north and south and there was a new quarry at SY 68367097, a short distance to the west. (2) Known as Grangecroft Quarries by 1959. (3) Site was partly quarried, with ground since restored and rough pasture in 1999. (4)

Weston, or Grangecroft, Quarry, the 19th to 20th century Limestone Quarry described above in (1-4), is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the north of Southwell. The quarry is visible over an area measuring approximately 260 m by 180 m. (5) A larger area of quarrying is recorded to the east at Suckthumb Quarry (see MWX4403), of which Weston Quarry may have been an extension. The quarry has been filled in by the date of the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (6) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
