Full Description
Butts Quarries, marked on the second edition OS map . (1) Part on east side worked by 1901 (2-3), the rest by 1927. 4-5) A small quarry with channelled face 15m long and 2.45m high; upper level has been drilled and broached. Bank on seaward side has scappled blocks on top. (6)
The limestone quarry described above (in 1-6) is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s at Lawnsheds to the east of Portland Bill Road. The quarry is visible over an area measuring approximately 55 m by 35 m. (7) The site is still visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (8) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
