Full Description
Longstone Ope Quarries, marked on the second edition OS map. (1)
Part worked by 1901, but mostly by 1927. (2) Quarry faces with lengths of channelling are clearly seen from the access track; also double overburden tips indicating tipped by tramway (cut by coast path) and shuttered concrete foundations (SY 68766934) for a frame saw. (3)
The coastal quarry described above (in 1-3) is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the east of Lawnsheds. The quarry is visible over an area measuring approximately 270 m by 128 m. (4) The site is still visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (5) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
