Full Description

Sheat Quarries, marked on the second edition OS map. (1)
First worked in a small way from the coast in 1901, then working inland by 1926. Further work after 1960 brought the quarry as far as Southwell High Street. The large quarry opening has exposures of overburden but no convincing quarry face. Blocks in bottom have drill holes (1960s type). There is a large flat-topped waste tip with a bank wall at the base on the west side. (2-3)

The coastal quarry, Sheat Quarries, described above (in 1-3) is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the east of Lawnsheds. The quarry is visible over an area measuring approximately 128 m by 90 m. (4) The site is still visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (5) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
