Full Description

The 1926-33 excavations by H P Smith at the Carter's Tile Works site produced significant quantities of Late Iron Age and Roman pottery and other finds dating from about 50BC to the 3rd century AD. This included a significant proportion of late pre-conquest or early Roman material (50BC-AD70) including local Durotrigian coarsewares, cream ware flagons, pre-Flavian samian wares and amphorae sherds. Later Roman pottery includes local coarsewares, New Forest wares and some late samian. There is very little pottery of late 2nd century pottery and no 4th century material. The pottery was associated with briquetage and other salt making objects, shale cores, etc. A number of features including ditches, pits, hearths and other features were found, but it is unclear how many were associated with the late Iron Age material, the early Roman or later Roman activity on the site.
