Description
In 1926, Messrs Carter & Co extended their tileworks at Hamworthy and discovered a Claudian coin and a series of ditches, pits, etc, when excavating a gravel pit and during the construction of a new kiln. H P Smith collated the evidence and plotted the approximate positions of the features noticed by the Carter's workmen and in 1926-8 carried out some excavations (using schoolboys from the South Road Boys School) in the area surrounding the original gravel pit, which revealed at least one kiln and several other features described as 'huts'. Gravel which was interpreted as part of a Roman road was found in the southern part of the site. (1) (2)
Further investigations took place in 1928-1933, but no details survive. It is not thought these later investigations were very extensive. (3)
